During my short career as a Life Agent, I spent most of my time dis-liking Life Insurance. I was not happy about the idea of selling a product that very few people liked to talk about and knew very little about. It was always an uphill battle for me. The actual tasks that I needed to perform the service was not something I was willing to do on a daily bases. I had experience in Adult Education, however the students actually signed up the classes and attended because they wanted to, with life insurance, it was always me "putting them" into an educational mode to learn the product before a transaction could occurre.
Later, I asked myself, why had I spent the time to become a Life Agent?
The answer was very interesting. Because, Insurance was love speaking from the grave and being a believer in love I was drawn to that profession as a supplement to my tax service.
As I look back on my short career, I found that clients spent more time trying to get rid of me then they did in listening to what I was trying to say.
What I was trying to say was: Life Insurance speaks for you after you are gone. Life Insurance cannot be manipulated into saying something that you did not intend to say. When a father prepares his family, financially, for his departure from earth, he is saying to his wife and children. "I love you" and I don't want you lives to change, financially, just because I am gone.
When a young mother takes out a $250,000 whole life insurance policy and leaves instructions that in the event of her untimely departure, the monies are to be used for the child's education ..... she is accepting responsibility as a parent even in death. And even if the young mother cannot afford the premiums on a quarter of a million dollar whole life policy she realizes that she can get a term life for 20 years, and should she pass away during that 20 year period of time the child would still have the monies for college. (Of course Term Life is just that - she would have nothing to show for the Life Insurance after the 20 years, so I always encouraged the young mother to start out with term life insurance and convert it to a whole life insurance policy ASAP or when her finances would allow)
I suppose we all would rather talk about something else other then Life Insurance. But the truth is, Life Insurance is about Love and when you look at it, is there any better subject?
